Early this week I notated my calender with upcoming events and those involving Shan, I emailed to him. A very sweet one, “Donut’s with Dad” was today from 7 AM to 8AM at the elementary school.

I thought, “Great! Lily and Shan will both love this!”

They both woke up early and I ushered them out of the house so that they wouldn’t be late. Within about five minutes, the telephone rang. It was Shan.

Me: Did you forget something?
Him: A guy here told me the donut thing wasn’t until next month.
Me: (frantically shuffling papers) Oh. Man. I’m sorry hon, I don’t know what I was thinking when I put it on my calender.
Him: So what time does Lily really need to be at school?
Me: I get her there by 8:30.
Him: Ok. I can handle it.

When he rolled back home at 8:45, I learned that despite my early morning miscalculation, they had made lemonade with it. Shan took Lily to get pastries at a nearby bakery and they shared a breakfast in front of the gymnasium together before school.

Little things like that. They rock.

I had no idea how much more time I would seem to have with this ‘kid in kindergarten’ gig. Right now Emma and Piper are both napping and I don’t know what to do. Clean the fridge? Organize the pantry? Plan another nourishing and creatively delicious supper? Screw around with flower pictures? I think we all know the answer to that.

Emma is wearing me out with the lies she has been telling. this began about three months ago and I realize that telling lies is a stage of growing up but the lies I hear, every day, sometimes as a joke (which is NOT FUNNY AT ALL btw) moreoften as a means to evade punishment is extrememly tiring.

“No,honey. You have not ‘pulled one over on me’ and furthermore, THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE!”

How have you gotten past this stage, ya’ll? As I recall, Lily had a very brief journey to the land of lie. She is the easy child. Apparently you only get one.

first day of school

I got up after having a terrible dream in which I had tried to pop a yellowing pustule on my forearm. Sure enough, as I popped the carbuncle, the entire arm vein flew out of the hole where it slid onto the floor spraying blood everywhere, in sickening heart beat pulses.

Figure that one out, Freud.

The hardest part about this morning was finding a place to park at the shool. I ducked into a street lined with houses and with signs admonishing me not to park there and parked anyway. (Note to self: investigate more acceptable places before tomorrow.)

This is the first and last day we are to walk the child to class directly and I can understand why..the halls were glutted with parents. My gracious, I don’t remember my parents ever walking me to class on the first day of school, although they must have in those early years. It is such a strange feeling, walking amidst all these other people who are leaving their kids at this towering edifice too. Into the fold she went and I am picking her up in a few whort hours. Emma couldn’t be happier, she misses her big sister.

last day of summer vacation

We are kissing it goodbye. Well, Lily is since her first day of kindergarten is tomorrow. Piper and Emma have two more weeks until their respective preschools start (WTF?!) and we will all be escorting Lily tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile I am fretting. I am so anxious I don’t even know wherere to begin. Should I plan her lunch now? Get her clothing ready? What time does she need to wake up in the morning? Do I join the PTA right away? When will she be assigned a unique pin number so that I can add money to her lunch account online? Is carpool going to be a total pain in the ass? And most importantly, How do I get the teacher to like me?

I feel almost completely incapacitated.

Serenity now….serenity now…serenity now…

I used to love these guys.

You know…The Flight of the Conchords. To admit they are hilarious would not do them justice. They are brilliant and creative and wonderful. The very first video I saw of them was on Youtube and it was then that I knew I would always love them.

That is, up until tonight, as we were getting into the car to drive to supper…and my oldest daughter started singing, “…And if you roll like us, you won’t get laid.” (see above video)and immmediately sequed into a Hannah Montana song. Does it matter that she doesn’t know what she sang? Of course it does.

Shannon looked back at me in the rearview mirror. “What did she just say?”

sigh. So no more FotC while the kiddies are listening. Which is sad too since Lily’s all time favorite youtube video is Foux Da Fa Fa. Although that one really doesn’t have any ‘inappropriate for kid’ moments.

WTF Mom?

I don’t have what you call a ‘complicated’ relationship with my Mom. I make her mad and she makes me crazy. For example:

This afternoon, after lunch, we were sitting in the living room together, watching Emma as she played with 5 different dolls simultaneously. It was pretty damn cute. I find it interesting that she is such a doll player while her older sister really couldn’t care less.

After a few minutes…

Mom: Anne. (a very serious tone in her voice)
Me: Uh-huh?
Mom: Why don’t you grow your hair long?
Me: (stunned silence)
Mom: (continuing) All three of your girls have beautiful long hair. Why don’t you grow your out too?
Me: Well. Because I like shorter hair on me. Are you suggesting that I do something just because everyone else is?
Mom: Yes.
Me: (incredulous and pretty pissed off by now) Are you kidding me?
Mom: It is odd that you don’t have long hair, that’s all I am saying.

This from the woman who has NEVER had long hair since I’ve known her. Well, except for maybe when I was an infant but that doesn’t count. People. For the record, I’ve had long hair before. Up until Lily was born…then I just went shorter. Who the hell cares? I like it. I don’t have to mess with it for very long. Sheesh!

And I just have to add in here, that when I was in first grade, My Mom cut my hair so short that people made fun of me. As in “Hey! Boys aren’t allowed in the girl’s bathroom!” It was mortifying. And it wasn’t until I was in middle school that she let me grow my hair out long enough to put into a ponytail. I mean, please, woman!

so no. I will not be growing my hair out anytime soon. And now it will only be because my own mother wants me to. See? I am still very childish. Eh.

She’s got it going on.

Let me say for the record, once again, how glad (pleased, excited, thrilled, relieved, etc) I am that Piper is my last baby. I just cannot handle any more late night crying (which she did 6 times between the hours of 12:55 and 2AM this morning), scorching diaper rashes that require immediate immersion washing when a poop comes along (three times yesterday, once last night), baby diarrhea (for the past 4 days), teething (presently), and that really bizarro unhappiness that results in screeching and unpleasantness every SINGLE DAY around 5 PM.

Really. I’m done.

I guess Piper didn’t get the memo yet.

things to consider

Yeah, I’ve been out of the blogosphere for awhile. I’m just not finding it easy or enjoyable to write anything right now and am considering taking a leave of absence. You’d think with my Mom in town that I’d have all kinds of time to get some thoughts out but that’s not the case.

Ya’ll keep doing what you’re doing. I’ll pop over from time to time.

Only a few more weeks until school begins. Wa-hooooooooooooo!
