Wee Misery

Sometime around 2AM Emma woke me up by crying and stomping over to the bed. I was sleeping in her other twin bed for reasons consisting of my banishment from the real bed (I wanted to read longer and Shan wanted to sleep. His early morning meeting trumped my hormonal insomnia.) So I reached down and lifted her next to me where she sniffled a little more before falling to sleep. You’d think at that time my spidey senses would have been on alert but no, I went back to sleep too. When she started crying again a half hour later I began to notice a familiar smell. Sour, bilesome, putrescence…and then the throwing up really began.

I will say this in Shans favor, despite having to wake up in a few hours for his meeting, as soon as he learned Emma was sick, he jumped in to help me. I was in charge of puke management and he gave Emma an ass-crack of dawn morning bath because there is nothing nastier than chunky dried hair and ya’ll know that the smell doesn’t go away or even lessen when it is dry so washing is essential. Poor baby, after changing the linens on my twin bed, I noticed she had sullied her own as well. That must have been what woke her up to begin with.

After operation clean shield we readied her in bed again but this time had a pile of towels handy. She puked again. We changed her clothes again. She puked again. We changed her clothes. And she slept until 5AM until waking me with the dry heaves and falling back to sleep. Basically, at this point, I don’t know if she has some 24-bug or if she is reacting to swallowing phlegm all day long (damn allergies), but there will be no gym daycare today. I hate the idea of exposing her to others if it is viral.

How long do you guys wait to give your pukey kids a drink? And what do you give them? She didn’t want anything last night so it wasn’t an issue but I’m just wondering. Back when we were little I remember the notion of a little carbonated 7-up was the common remedy but I never knew if it actually helped.

In other news, my sister’s son is recuperating fine from his eye surgery. His parents may take a little longer to heal but my nephew is getting better every day. Thanks to ya’ll for the good wishes there.

And maybe it is just me but does it seem like there are a shizload of pregnant women out and about? It seems like one out of every four women looks all knocked up everywhere I go and if they aren’t in that delicate condition than they are trying to get that way. All I can say is ergh. and Gak. GAK goddammit! The latest bucket-of-fun preggo symptom to make me crazy is the old acid reflux and the only thing that helps worth a damn are ranitidine tablets. Tums? hah. maalox? bah! What did the cavewomen do before ranitidine? I shudder to think.

Friday Love

I’m putting a call out for some good safe thoughts while my nephew Matthew experiences anaesthesia for his eye surgery. Having to put a six month old under (it is a necessary surgery to correct his strabismus, not purely cosmetic) scares the shiz out of me and I’m glad that we’ve never had to put the girls through it. (knock on wood) So good sweet recuperative happy energy thoughts for the little one. And his parents too.

Matthew’s twin is currently sleeping, blissfully unaware of anything other than he is not with his Momma. And I am getting a slight feel for what it will be like this February to care for three kids at one time.

The Fury

Here is an example of good hormones gone bad. It happened today.

I happened to have a little 5 dollar gift card from a petstore and since my dog needed food, I decided to use it there. Most of the time this dogstore has better prices than even wallyworld so it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The girls are loaded in the car, it is cold and pouring down rain, I park, I un-buckle the apes from their safety harnesses when I notice they have both kicked there shoes off. And Emma is wailing because I told her we cannot take her lovey into the store. (WTF?! Lovey NEVER goes into the stores with us!) By now I am getting rained on and am pissed off at having to re-shoe the girls, which takes entirely too long since I had made the mistake of letting them out of the carseats to begin with. You do the math.

Finally we walk across the rainy cement to the store and grab a cart. I grab and I grab and I pull but the fucking things are stuck together. Why didn’t I just stop and go in the store? Why did I just keep tugging at the stupid carts, I cannot tell you. An elderly woman walks up and says, “Oh she lost a boot!” and I momentarily stop shaking the hell out of the carts to see that Emma, who is also in my arms at the time, has dropped a rainboot. That was it. I settled for a loose but wet cart, plop Emma down, and we go into the store. Why? I cannot tell you.

We head straight for the food aisle. I notice the old lady dog food is on sale for 5 dollars cheaper and I am feeling better about making the trip after all. We wheel down to look at hamsters, and guninea pigs. I make sure Lily doesn’t tap on the glass of the turtle acquariums and we move along slowy admiring the colorful parakeets and pigeons and finally the fish. The girls loved it and for a minute I was smiling too and all the previous crap was behind us.

Until we go to check out. There is a girl ahead of me and only one checker so I settle in for a brief wait. No biggie. Correction:It would have been no biggie if in fact the transaction actually progressed so that the woman paid for her cat shampoo. In fact, here is what was going on: the customer was methodically going through every single credit card she owned to find one with any kind of available balance. The checker was on the telephone reading card numbers into it but the line was not moving. Look, I know what it is like to have no money but today I was feeling uber pregnant and my two girls were about to blow, I had no patience for it. Finally and For the Love of God I was instructed to go to a different lane, after 4 additional carts pulled up behind me with equally disgruntled customers manning them.

I get to the lane and a kid walks up. He checks in, rings up the dogfood, takes my 5 dollar gift card and tells me I still have to pay 26 dollars for the dogfood. “We have a problem,” I begin, “The sign over the dogfood said it was on sale and you are charging me the regular price.” He replies, “I asked you if you belonged to ‘the club’ but you didn’t so you pay regular price.” And there I was, I had become another problem customer by trying to pay a different price than had been rung up and I was so angry I could hear my blood pumping in my ears. “Forget about it.” I told him. And I paid. And we left. And the thing that really burns me up is that I actually do belong to ‘the club’ I just didn’t have the stupid card on me. Joining the fucking club was how I got the gift card in the first damn place!And I am still hacked off over five dollars. FIVE DOLLARS PEOPLE!

I wish Shan were home so he could slap some sense into my head.

weekend wrap

“I have bad news.” Shan greeted me this morning. “The mouse is back.”

Ever since Holli’s post about a mouse we’d had a few intermittent experiences with a local pestilential rodent. Traps are set out everywhere before bed at night but for the past two weeks there had been no activity. Last night we left a new loaf of artisanal jalapeno-cheddar bread out on the counter and this morning there is a small hole burrowed into one end. It was a slap in the face because only the day before I had asked Shan if he thought maybe the damn thing had left.

Apparently not.

It’s not just the disease-carrying that bothers the shit out of me. It is the laissez faire placement of indiscreet droppings and the notion that the little bastard is scurrying across my countertops while the rest of us sleep. Uninvited. I suspect we will have to jack things up a notch to get the thing but Lily won’t need to know anything about it.

Yesterday in the car she innocently asked, “Do people eat animals?” Yes baby- I answered her- that is what meat is. “No we don’t.” Honey, what do you think chicken is? We also eat pig and cow. Her solemn face took on a look of worry when Daddy launched into his hunting-man’s menu and he threw out animals like deer, dove, antelope, buffalo…by the end Lily was crying. My poor little vegetarian doesn’t need to know that Mommy wants to exterminate a foul little mouse. and STAT.

I saw a new camera to adore. We stopped by a local event with the girls in tow on Saturday and a photog was doing her thing. At one point I walked over to the picnic table and glanced at the beast: EOS-1D with one of those enormous papparazzi telephoto lenses attached. And for the low low price of 8 grand I can have one too! 16.7 megapixels! Holy crap. I would have loved to have picked her camera up, if only for a minute.
