i just wanted to share with ya’ll that today, while i was out shopping with my mom, Lily pooped in her potty chair!

oh man.

please let this be the start of something good, like some consistency! Having only one shild in diapers would be such a godsend.

and you know what she wanted for a reward? not the princess poptarts that were purchased for just such an occurence but vanilla icecream.

what a girl.

the 2nd day of Christmas

This will go down as one of the best Christmases ever. It wasn’t a matter of receiving a cornucopia of gifts or of overspending on presents for others but that I finally had a real family Christmas. I had forgotten what that was like and although we sorely missed my Dad, it was beautiful anyway. Early in the afternoon Christmas day I poured my mother and I a glass of champagne and my sister a glass of sparkling apple cider and toasted my father. I think I only said 12 words in a run-on sentence but by the end of it both me and my sister were in tears and I suspect my mom was too, tho she is better at concealing it. After that first glass I poured mimosas using sugar-free tang and laughed about how Dad would have been puking over such a ludicrous drink, but DAMN…they were tasty.

Christmas Eve was spent at my MILs for smoked turkey and gift-giving. I tried a different recipe for the ol Buche de Noel and it turned out kinda creepy lookin’…a little on the phallic side but don’t tell anyone. My sister was not a fan of the genoise cake but you know what,eff her. I’ll send up a picture posthaste for your judgement.

Christmas morning I got up early to hang candy canes on the tree and assemble everyone’s stocking. Shan had placed Lily’s bike near the fireplace and tried to make bootprints of ash on the floor (easier said than done). Since Lily was not a fan of Santa to begin with, I wasn’t sure she’d appreciate the idea of him in our house while she slept, but who am i to argue with creative genius?

Then the girls woke up promptly at 8 and we got to opening presents. I am happy to report that Lily loved it. She tore into the job and continued to ask, “Mommy, where are more presents?” While Emma was just happy to be there and play with the wrapping…oh yeah, and with whatever toy Lily opened. Emma’s motto: If it’s Lily’s, then it has to be good.

Dinner was very good and not as stressful as it could have been had I not micromanaged everything to the point of idiocy. The prime rib was still very tasty and the mini yorkshire puddings divine. Are popovers the same thing as YP? I suspect the two are very related. In any event everyone ate until they busted a gut and then came dessert. The mixed apple pie (grannies and Christmas apples) = exquisite goodness and the double layer chiffon pumpkin pie, tho labor intensive was well worth it. Chiffon…who knew how good it was?!

The other day while Emma sat in my lap, she reached over and pulled off my delete key on the keyboard. So now, rather than fixing it, I have no key there. It kinda sucks ass. But enough about that.

Shan strolled up to me this morning and said, “Oh, btw, i invited uncle andy over for christmas supper.” oh i lost it. i blew up. it was like the eruption of mount vesuvious all over his ass. and you know what? i totally mishandled it and have had to suck it up to apologise many times already today. the problem was that i was planning on a small dinner on sunday, having my mom and sister over and shan’s parents at the most. my mom and sister and i have not had christmas together in many years, not since my dad died and i had these huge plans to remember dad along with previous christmases and then toast him with many glasses of champagne. the problem with this plan was that i never told it to shan. see how i fucked it all up? then, yesterday morning, shan’s mom called and said, “oh, and i told my parents to drop by your house sometime christmas evening.” no biggie, i thought, i’ll just make enough for them in case they would like to stay for supper. but still, i was a tiny bit put out. now don’t get me wrong, my extended family is awesome, i just had really set my heart on a small gathering to remember my father and to be honest, the people that knew him the best (mom, me, and babs) would have probably enjoyed it more than say, shan’s folks and grandparents who met him only once.

so there it is. now i have to prepare for a dinner party of 11 with two little urchins thrown in.

Dinner menu:

roasted bone-in prime rib
yorkshire pudding
sauteed spinach with garlic and olive oil
garlic mashed potatoes w/ jus
cranberry sauce

apple pie
pumpkin pie

and i plan on serving one hell of a mulled red wine. So Merry Christmas, ya’ll!

preschool concert

So today after dropping Lily off at preschool with all of her shittola including a gift book for the party exchange, I took Mom shopping a bit. A few hours later it was time for the 2 year old Christmas concert at the church. We showed up ten minutes early and yet the little ‘concert’ room was packed to the gizzard with a bunch of other assholes with video cameras and digital apparati. I was pissed and made an ass of myself by pulling over near the ’stage’ with my own camera to take pics of my wee lass. Then the class filed in. WTF?! I couldn’t find Lily anywhere. There was no little girl in a green plaid dress with white tights and black boots anyplace. Shan asked a teacher where Lily was and then we saw her. The plaid dress had been replaced with the backup outfit of jeans and a peach sweater. And I went into a trance remembering this morning’s conversation:

Me: Lily, would you like to wear a diaper today or underwear?
Lily: panties.
Me: Ok, hon, I know you have been doing really well with panties at school and all but maybe since today is a big day, maybe you should wear a diaper just to be safe.
Lily: no mommy, i want panties.
Me: Underwear it is.

I can only guess there was a small error in the bathroom at school. In any event, the kids had all filed in wearing tinsel loops resembling halos and the show began. 4 songs. A few had some really cute hand motions and dancing associated with them. I had sung three of the songs with Lily for the last week and I knew that she could sing the words but for some reason, who knows why, she refused to sing a single word, much less smile at a gah-damned person in the audience. She stood there with a slanted halo draped over her head with the most baleful expression I have ever seen. And you know what? It was frigging hilarious! Shan and I laughed our asses off. A few of the kids sang, others danced a little, some hid, and the remaining 2 yr olds acted just like Lily. Unimpressed and a little confused. Why were Mommy and Daddy here at school? WTF is going on here? Get them out, dammit!

At least my little girl wasn’t the one with her finger in her nose THE-ENTIRE-TIME!

bed wetting

So another reason you don’t want your kids sleeping in your bed at night is to prevent soggy blankets. I woke up shortly after midnight after putting my hand on a a very damp sheet. Then the smell of urine assaulted my nostrils and I was wide awake. “Hon,” I sang out. “Lily has wet our bed.”

Not that big a deal. And she slept thru the whole linen changing as well as fresh diaper application following the ‘peeling off’ of the wet drawers. Up until last night she had done really well with sleeping in underwear. oh well, two steps forward one step back I guess.

I called my sister this morning to discover her plans for the day and found one pissed off and edgy pregnant woman. As if this is any different from her usual attitude…but today she is sicker than sick with a case of that phlegmy crap that’s been going around for months now. “Call your dr.” I told her but of course she won’t because she has an appt. on thursday, which really makes no sense but whatever. You never can tell her a gah-damn thing anyway, so fuckit.

Can you believe Christmas is in 5 days? Sheeeze.

my kingdom for a midol

now i remember why i got on the pill..these menstrual cramps are miserable.

We all just got back from a lovely lunch at a local sandwich joint with a friend of mine who has a little boy who is 11 mo. younger than Lily and 11 mo. older than Emma. I thoroughly enjoy going to a public place when both of my girls are overtired and crying, and acting poorly. Especially during lunch-rush, with plenty of business people sitting closeby, shooting evil looks and disdain in my direction. Lily was in special form, crying or crawling beneath the table. I even had to take her to the bathroom for a talking-to. It was great. Emma basically fussed until lunch arrived and then promptly dropped her sandwich on the floor. I loved it. a lot.

Their ruinous behaviour basically put the kibosh on getting out to the grocery store anytime soon, so now I can sit here and enjoy my cramps. yay cramps!
