All you people probably know about the phenylpropanolamine OTC drug recall but I just found out about it. Apparently the component has been linked to hemorrhagic stroke in women and the fda is reccommending you not give it to kids either.

The ingredient is listed in alot of crap. Alka-seltzer, Dinetapp, Tavist-D, Triaminic, etc. So look into it and return it to the bastards ASAP.

baby steps

Emma took three steps all by herself tonight, the little walking monkey!

She is snoozing right now while Shan plays video games with a few friends. He rarely does this (thankfully) and in the meantime I am fidgeting with the tv. Nothing on but horror and real-life crime news. yuck.

This afternoon I made some chocolate dipped oreo cookies for a friend’s birthday party tomorrow. She is more than an acqaintance but not really a bosom chum so I had no idea what kind of a gift to give her other than something edible. She happens to like that kind of a thing. Milk chocolate melted with a little vegetable oil heated in a double boiler until melted. The dipping was messy and mildly tricky. After they hardened in the refrigerator I drizzled melted white chocolate on top for a little visual interest.

You know, I should have done some pretzels too. oh freaking well.

I am so sickened with these acts of violence. Past, present, and future. I am so tired of learning about the loss of life, the innocent people gone now, men, women, children. And don’t give me any of that horseshit about how the US military is responsible for similar atrocities because I don’t buy it.

How can we, as humans, find joy in anything when there is so much suffering? The key is distraction. I have kids that run me through the wringer pretty constantly, other people buy things, or drink, or watch movies. ad infinitum.

But I’m still sickened with this blackness in the pit of my stomach. Is it just human nature to not get along? There will always be envy and coveting what others have, so will there also always be violence and revenge?

I need to stop reading the news. period. at this point, nothing will ever surprise me again anyway. The lengths evil will go to…

wallyworld does carry compact flash cards and card readers. Too bad I didn’t notice until getting to the car that I bought an sd car instead of compact flash. I had to go back with children getting crazy, pick out the correct card and THEN take everything back to customer service. I am getting pretty sick and tired of all these retail stores making me go to the customer service area to return or exchange things. Back in the day any friendly (bah HAH) cashier could handle it. lame lame lame.

I also want to complain about the double packing material and anti-theft BS. Instead of pulling the card off the shelf I had to ask for assistance from the nearest employee. Begin rant: People who steal shit ought to be flogged and publicly humiliated, or branded…something to discourage them from doing it ever again. I wonder what kind fo safegaurds there will be in twenty years (Assuming humanity isn’t wiped out via a mutated avian flu or nuclear winter) against criminals? The current criminal judicial system isn’t really worth a shit, I mean, really.
and before I get too zany, the flash card was in two layers of that hard plastic crap that you have to cut through with bolt cutters. I hate that.

Again, at least it is saturday! and at least I have some camera memory. and at least the weather is kicking ass, it is perfect. it is san francisco temperate outside. i dig.

camera trouble

So my compact flash reader (for my digital camera) is corrupting my compact flash cards. My one gig card was so corrupted I sent it back to San Disk for replacement. I thought, hopefully, that it was just an aberration. However, last night after snapping a few pics of us all gussied up, we went to the party, played poker, visited with people, ate snackypants, and came back home by 11pm, (a long sentence I know) I raced to my computer to upload and was CRUSHED to discover my other compact flash card is now also destroyed. In fact, Shan and I got into a huge argument at midnight as I rifled through all the files in the office looking for my camera warranty information. He couldn’t understand why I had to find it right then and resorted to basely referring to my camera as a ‘toy’. Way to make points for your effort, hon. I will say this, at least he got out of bed and tried to help figure out the problem albeit pissed off and snarly about it. He narrowed it down to the reader and not my camera.

So now I have to grab a new flash card reader (I hope wallyworld carries them) and a new card. Surely they do, right? grrrrrrrrrr. I am so beside myself but am hoping against hope that the problem is really with the reader itself and not my esspensive camera. Altho, I guess if I go awhile with no digital camera I’ll just have to return to the roots of photography and pull out my minolta of love film camera.

So there’s that.

The party was nice enough if not formal at all. In fact, I’d guess only about a quarter of the people who showed up were in costume and Shan and I kicked ass on that front. I HAVE to take a picture of the hat. It was Shan’s great grandma’s and she had a ton of them (each different from the next but just as interesting and cute)having lived in the day when all proper women wore hats and actually dressed up when they left the house. Amazing.

And yet again I kicked that texas hold’em ass. There is something really cool about out-lasting your husband and making it to the final table but again, I got busted out. An ace-queen with nothing on the flop or river just lost out to a pair of kings but it was damn fun. It is official, I am (like the rest of america) a texas hold’em junkie. An older guy at the table said to me in a slight deadpan, “I really like your hat. You have to promise to wear it to my funeral…It’ll probably be within the year.” Oh I laughed my ass off.

And it is Saturday! Time to get the kids ready for another journey to the wallyworld.

What the eff?!

So you know how Shan is on the board of Habitat for Humanity? Well tonight is their Halloween Poker Benefit. Last night Shan announced to me that he is going to dress as a gangster from the roaring 20’s. Isn’t that great? I was THRILLED to learn this the emmer-effing NIGHT before! For some ridiculous reason I thought we weren’t going to dress up, since we hadn’t discussed it any freaking earlier. So I stayed up late last night looking at flapper-ish costumes I could have 1) purchased or 2) made weeks ago had I known. My MIL saved my ass by having a really swell dress, a long strand of pearls, and this hat that is to die for. I’ll have to try and get a picture so you can see. Something tells me Cecily will just die because at one time she was very immersed in vintage clothing. I said it once and I’ll say it again a good MIL is hard to find and I totally lucked out with mine.

So that’s that.

On my sister front…a few good things. Her divorce is final. FINALLY. Now she and her baby daddy can start making plans to hook up leagally. The other is she had another sonogram today. One of the twins is a boy! The other wouldn’t cooperate and kept its legs closed shut. As I recall Emma was the same way…stubborn little toot.

And more poo for you. Emma has reached that very fine age where taking a shower stimulates her to poop. I remember Lily went through this very stage a few years ago and now it has fallen again. Today after the shower, Lily announced, “Look, Emma went poopoo.” and sure enough, there by the shower drain was a stinking snake of doo. At least I was fast enough this time to prevent any fisting and or fecal ingestion.

Damn. TGIF.

I’ve been listening to Tom Wait’s Rain dogs album today. It is heaven to me. That album is the theme of my life. Introducing Waits to people can be tricky business sometimes so I won’t tell you to listen to him. His brilliant lyrics and song writing is an acquired taste for some. I acquired it the first time I ever heard it. Back me up JC.

Props upon props upon props to Mama C-ta for giving me the heads up on these baby leg warmers. I just ordered the cow pattern for Emma and cannot wait to see them.
