That’s just gross…

Shan left for meetings this morning so when the girls woke up, the three of us filed into the living room. Lily got some cheerios and cartoons, Emma sat on a blanket and played with toys, and I hunkered down with the latest IKEA catalog. The dog walked past several times but I didn’t pay her any mind until the 3rd of 4th pass. “Do you need to go out-…” I started to ask when I saw the pile of poo about 6 feet away. So dog poop is gross enough but things became markedly worse when I noticed Emma was manhandling something and had smeared the something all around her mouth. Sure enough, the dog had been kind enough to drop a single pellet near Emma during one of her walkby’s.

Oh, people, it was the grossest thing I have ever dealt with. She had crushed the pellet into each fist and attempted to eat some. It was mortifying. I washed her hands off and scrubbed out her mouth and cleaned up the discreet dog piles in the rest of the house and finally called the Dr.

She agreed it was totally revolting but assured me I wasn’t the first Mom to come across such a diabolical act by one so young. She said, “If Emma comes down with diarrhea sometime this next week you’ll know why.”

What a great start to the weekend!

rocking

Somehow the three of us wound up together, sitting on the rocking chair. I could tell Emma was getting close to wanting a nap and Lily needed love since she had just spilled off the piano bench and landed sharply on the floor. So we rocked awhile and I asked Lily what song she wanted me to sing. “Moonshadow…” she requested. As I sang, Emma snuggled in and got comfortable. It was good. Then Lily reached over and touched Emma’s cheek, she brushed her fingers thru her hair.
Me: Now, Lily, let’s leave Emma alone now.
Next Emma retaliated and reached out a tiny claw and attempted to stroke Lily’s hair but it wound up being a hook that grabbed and pulled the fine hairs while Lily pulled away in the opposite direction.
Me: Okay, Emma…that’s fine(I disentangle her fingers) You see Lily, she was trying to copy you. Let’s all just try to relax.
The ball was already rolling and the two girls took turns slapping, pulling, and laughing at each other for a good while. Briefly, I considered reaching over and grabbing Harry Potter, wondering if there was any chance in hell that I could manage to read, rock, and hold both girls calm. HAH! Eventually they settled back down and we had a small moment of excellent peace.

I am convinced that life is made up of these small moments; you can’t have too many of them.

what i like…

you know what I like? I like inviting myself to dinner. Tonight I basically wound up inviting myself to someone else’s home for supper. oh yeah, and the kids and husbnad too. At least I voluneteered to bring dessert. As I type, a peach cobbler is baking merrily away. Peach cobbler is one of those things people need more of. I firmly believe this. That, and vodka screwdrivers. Just imagine what a better world it would be.

So that’s just where I am at this wonderful day in final months of june. er. july. wtf. The summer is just rolling me by.

Happy day, ya’ll! The internet has been functioning like a dream!

ol tuesday post

Okay, you MUST try that recipe. Noodle around with it a little, as it were. I always do. We ate it last night alongside my homemade sourdough whole wheat bread and salad. Dessert. Well, you know I like chocolate. And so did everyone else…this is a great cake! I whipped a little cream and served a nice dollop ontop each slice with a strong dose of amaretto- macerated sliced strawberries. Futher, I got one of those silicone bundt pans for 7 bucks at Wallyworld and they work just fine…a far cry from the steep 30 bucks a pop for the nordicware iron. You just have to increase baking time by 15 minutes (or so), at least in my oven. Now I luff nordicware but the cost combined with the space they eat up in my miniscule kitchen prevents me from buying too many.

Shan has been doing a great job with Lily lately. You know how we’ve had problems with getting her to sleep in her own bed at night? Well, now he puts her in her own bed while he lays down in the spare and he reads (Harry Potter of course) by a tiny booklight until she falls asleep. She sleeps all night long now! If only Emma would follow her lead. I’m still up 2-3 times a night. zzZZzz.

Potter Pain

So my husband is distraught this morning over the character who get’s killed in the book. (Don’t look at me like that, the media announced this spoiler ages ago) I asked him if he thought a grief counselor would be covered under our crappy health insurance policy and handed him a piece of toast. He thought it might. Now he’s pushing me to read it so that we can discuss how very different the next Harry Potter will be. As it is right now, I am about ready to wrap up an old sci-fi/fantasy by my main man George R.R Martin called Dying of the Light.

Any other good books out there?
