This afternoon Shan’s sister Crissy went with me to register at BabiesRUs; it took far longer than I had expected and somehow we managed to stop right around the start of rush hour. Great planning and it worked out fine despite the efforts of a woman to side-swipe my Xterra in her little sports coup.

Registering for all these things was a lot like registering for wedding presents although not quite as fun. I mean, how can a 4 pack of rubber nipples be fun? Don’t answer that. I did find a terribly appropriate crib blanket set and all kinds of other good things like a stroller and a carseat and a breast pump. sighhhhh.

Dinner was excellent. Although Shan had promised to go with me to Central Market tonight, he had some work to complete and didn’t want to spend too much time with me in the yogurt aisle. To make up for it he took me to dinner at the best Italian Restaurant in town called Mama Emilias. Once we settle in at the table, a waiter brought in the menus and wine list. Shan asked if I was going to get a glass and we decided it would be just fine to have a little wine with dinner. When the waiter came back we had each decided to get a glass of Dunn-something cabernet and the waiter launched into a pitch about buying the bottle ( you know how it is) when Shan blurts out, “No, we’ll each have a glass. She’s pregnant!” and I kind of shrank down into the chair. It doesn’t really matter that the Dr. said an occasional glass of wine is no problem for the baby’s health, I’m talking about social mores here. You just don’t do that!

All in all, the food was savory and I only drank about 1/3 the glass of wine. Now I am here at home tweaking the baby registery while Shan tinkers in the garage. I feel like baking something super chocolatey.

In the 25th week:

Here is an exerpt of a conversation Cecily and I had today:

pfeifmeup: I told Shan I wanted a jelly donut last night
pfeifmeup: he said ok
pfeifmeup: and rummaged around in the kitchen
pfeifmeup: and came back with a damned piece of bread torn into a circle and folded over a huge blob of plum jelly.
pfeifmeup: I gave it to Darwin.
pfeifmeup: and she loved it.
pfeifmeup: Doesn’t Shan suck?!

It’s a girl!

We got in this morning and after waiting 45 minutes (the sonographer always has a long line) and working with the sonogram technician, she printed a picture of the child’s external genitalia. It seems a little strange that we have a picture of baby’s private parts but then again, it’s not like we asked it. She just took it and handed it to us while explaining that the view was as if Lily was sitting on top of a glass table and we were beneath it. This reminds me of a terrible story I heard while working at Boar’s Head in Austin, in which one of the bartender’s walked through the front door of his buddy’s house to find similar arrangements, except those arrangements involved consenting adults and feces.

Even with this knowledge, it is only 99% accurate and I have decided to keep the babyroom at a neutral color scheme. Walls and linens. This thursday Shan’s sister Crissy is taking me to register for some goods at the local BabiesRus and I still have some research to do as far as car seats and strollers go but fortunately this is a labor of love.

oh Man!

We got to the Drs office about 15 minutes early hoping that the sonogram technician would be free and could work us in a little early. Imagine how disappointing it was that not only was the waiting room FULL but most everybody was there for a sonogram. A few of the women looked about ready to burst.As far as showing, I was in the middle between the big mamas and the no-show-ers. After close to 60 minutes we finally got in to see the lady, soonafter Shan threatened we were going to leave and to hell with them. I counter threatened with a ‘you-can-leave-me-hereand-go-get-something-to-eat-and-come-back-but-*I*-am-not-leaving-yet.’ The coolest pasrt was during the wait I got a business call and had to go talk outside the office for about 15 minutes to a potential client that had received a business postcard from the company many months ago. I had all but decided the postcard mail-out program had been a big waste of time and money but if I can get this guy on-board, it may just pay for it! Fingers are crossed.

Finally we got in to see the sonogram lady and as usual she was very personable and chatty and kind. I popped up on the table and the first thing out of her mouth were, ‘This baby is in frank breech position!’ whihch means it was butt down with its legs and head up towards my belly button. I think this must be the baby’s favourite position and it stayed in it even through me shifting from side to side and backside again. How obnoxious is that! At one point, the wee child even put one of its tiny hands in the region (The sonographer asssured us this didn’t mean it was a boy. no comment.). The best part of all this is that I got to see the baby actually kick at me as I felt it, thereby proving that the ‘gas’ bubbles I thought I had been experiencing actually were baby all along.

I’m thinking neutral nursery colors may be the way to go.

The doctor did call Shan as we drove off and told us to come back on Monday at 10AM to try and re-check. He is so nice to us; I LOVE having a Dr. that Shan knew previous to us getting pregnant. He seems to go the extra mile for us and I appreciate it.

I am on the cusp of going into the 24th week. Still no word yet on the gender (although we both believe it’s a girl) because at last friday’s dr’s appointment, the sonogram tech wasn’t in! Shan and I took it in stride and are looking forward to this thursday’s ‘look-see’ appointment.

This past weekend was absolutely wonderful! My best girl Cecily drove up and we had a big time together, shopping around the town square and perusing all the local baby shops. Although I’m not ready to start into the deep end of baby clothing acquisition it was still really fun looking at all the possibilities. We walked so much and went in and out of all the shops with such abandon that we missed lunch and by 5 PM were on the brink of collapse. But still we didn’t eat. Instead, once we got to the house, Cecily exclaimed about how perfect the light was and suggested she shoot some belly pictures. She laughed her ass off at my non-maternity skirt and lectured about how I can’t keep on just buying the next size larger since my hind quarters are not growing in the same manner as my midriff. Of course she’s right.

After the photo shoot we decided to get a snack at a local chain and wound up sharing 3 appetizers. Yes, lords and ladies, we had fried cheese. Also chicken nachos and asian lettuce wraps, also chicken. It was all good but completely ruined our appetites for supper that night and Shan ate grilled salmon salad all by himself.

note to self: Do not let the fried cheese sit long enough to come down to room temperature. not good.

I have to mention that Cecily made me two of the most delicate and beautiful necklaces. The first one is composed of tiny blue fiber-optic beads with silvery spacer beads (i know she named them but I forgot again) and a little 4 leaf clover charm. The clasp has a special name too and it resembles one of those life saver bouys that you toss out to swimmers. A little bar is on the other end of the necklace and you push it through the lifesaver and let it catch on it’s own. awesome! The other necklace is made of 3 strands of light peachy-apricot beads, are they glass, but just absolutely gorgeous. A little more formal than the first one but lovely lovely.

Finally Cecily dragged me to look at maternity clothes at the local Target and convinced me to get some basics. I’m so glad she did.

We are driving back to Austin this next weekend and while Shan works on framing the kitchen for some friends of ours, I’ll be on different missions with Cecily. We’ll try to look at different types of papers for potential baby announcements as well as go to ‘Pea in a Pod’ maternity shops for a little more clothing. Thank God for Cecily, that’s all I’m going to say on the matter.

So it has been all together too long since the last time I posted. Cecily is terribly ashamed of me as well as embarrassed, since she is the one responsible for creating this whole thing. I am about 5 and 1/2 months pregnant now and am amazed that so much time has passed since we first found out at the sandwich shop. My belly is definitely obvious and it’s just still strange enough to me that I keep on pointing it out to Shan by lifting up the bottom of my shirt and saying ‘Look honey!’.

This friday we are meeting with the Dr. again and he is going to try and take a sonogram to confirm what he has thought all along about the gender. I want to ask about doing sit-ups and whether or not I should believe the pregnancy books that say I’m not supposed to work out much in the 3rd trimester. I’m lucky if I can get 3 good solid workouts in as it is now and even luckier if I can hold off on eating any fried cheese products! Imagine the damage if I wasn’t burning these extra calories?!

It is a day of national mourning and solitude with all the networks on television going apeshit with memorial coverage. I think they might ruin the real emotional impact by re-hashing and using the same exploited buzz words over and over again. No one can or should ever forget the terrible destructive events of last year, the loss of life and of family, I just wish there wasn’t such a seemingly gleeful manner in which the tv stations are handling it.
